There are those who called him a living saint during his lifetime, and many people regarded him with admiration and love. Born in Fussen, Germany, in 1819, he showed signs early of a vocation to religious life. As a young man, he walked for 50 hours from his hometown to Einsiedeln, Switzerland, seeking admission to the Benedictines, but he was considered too young.
After a vision or locution from Our Lady, he pledged his life to missionary evangelization in the New World. He entered the Redemptorist Order and arrived in the United States in 1843. Unlike a brief devotional card, this minibook provides historical context for his 24 years of ministry, including service in western Pennsylvania, leadership roles within the Redemptorists, and extensive mission preaching across multiple states.
One of his best-known strengths was his work in the confessional. Compared to shorter saint summaries, this booklet gives readers his own words on mercy, repentance, and compassionate priestly care. It is well suited for personal devotion, parish libraries, confirmation saint research, and anyone seeking a Catholic book on a missionary priest later compared to Padre Pio and St. Jean Vianney.
